(This kokeshi doll was made by Niyama Keimi（新山慶美), a traditional craftsman from Yajirō（弥治郎）in Miyagi Prefecture. Born in 1925 (Taishō 14), he was the eldest son of Niyama Keiji（新山慶治）and inherited the family’s woodcraft tradition after WWII.

If you’re looking for perfect, this is not for you, but if you’re looking for potential, these will finish up very nicely. They are not perfectly round. They are a bit warped or oblong, but a neat primitive look. The big one does have some tiny little knots which add to the character. these were handmade on a lathe here locally by a gentleman who is no longer with us. They just need some finishing, a “lot” of sanding and a clearcoat or oil of your choice.
