Nella Venezia del secondo Seicento il calafato Francesco Santurini quondam Stefano e il "marangone" Francesco Santurini quondam Antonio si divisero tra Arsenale e teatro. Il primo, dopo essersi distinto come ingegnere e macchinista dei maggiori palcoscenici musicali della città, ottenne fama europea in qualità di architetto-scenografo alla corte dei Wittelsbach a Monaco. Il secondo, maestranza tuttofare avviata all'arte scenica, fondò quel teatro di Sant'Angelo che sarebbe diventato, nel secolo seguente, la sala di riferimento di Antonio Vivaldi e Carlo Goldoni. Sulla base di documenti di prima mano, il volume fa luce su un aspetto originale, finora sottovalutato dalla storiografia: il rapporto di unicità tra la civiltà del mare e la civiltà del teatro nella Serenissima Repubblica. In questo binomio fortunato si inserisce la vicenda dei due "gemelli" veneziani, intrecciata con la storia dello spettacolo italiano ed europeo d'età barocca, tra cicli di festeggiamenti principeschi e varo di bucintori dogali, tra pratiche di palcoscenico e imprese d'opera costantemente sull'orlo della bancarotta.
