This 2nd edition (Tome II) has been published in 1732. The maps were accompanied by information on cosmography, geography, history, genealogy, heraldry, and costumes of the world. The maps in the Atlas Historique were mainly based on those of the French cartographer, Guillaume De L'Isle, but were presented by Chatelain in an encyclopaedic form. Description: This very scarce attractive original old antique print / plate / etching / engraving originates from: 'Wouter Schoutens, Reys-Togten naar en door Oost-Indien ...' (Wouter Schoutens travels into the East Indies), 2nd. edition, published by Andries van Damme, Amsterdam, 1708. Artists and Engravers: Wouter Schouten (1638-1704) joined the Dutch VOC as a surgeon on an adventureous expedition to the East Indies during the years 1658-1665. In 1660 he was present at the Dutch siege of Makassar (in Sulawesi) and he participated in the campaigns of Rucklof van Goens along the Malabar coast. 1939 pre war classic, Europe looked like this before Hitler. Light red (wine?) stain on front cover otherwise it’s in excellent condition. No tears, writing or other markings of any kind. Mounted in cloth. Very sturdy map. They knew how to make maps in 1939.

Description: This rare engraving originates from 'Nieuw en Volkomen Woordenboek van Konsten en Weetenschappen ...', published by S.J. Baalde, Amsterdam, 1770. This is in fact an early Dutch encyclopaedia. Artists and Engravers: The author of this work is Egbert Buys. Egbert Buys (ca. 1725-1769) started his career as the author of Den Algemeene Spectator. After having been accused of maltreatment of his wife and having caused several scandals, he left for England where he stayed for more than five years. Returned in Amsterdam he published a much enlarged re-edition of the famous English-Dutch dictionary of Sewel in 1766.
