Description: This antique map originates from "Atlas Antiquus - Zwolf Karten zur alten Geschichte", designed and prepared by Heinrich Kiepert, 1898 ed.. Artists and Engravers: Kiepert, Heinrich (1818-1899), was a German geographer, and the son of a wealthy businessman. During his youth he already travelled, and developed an interest in the geographic circumstances. He then also began to draw. He was supported in this by family friend Leopold von Ranke. His first atlas was published in 1848: Historisch-Geographischer Atlas der alten Welt, followed in 1854 by the first edition of the Atlas Antiquus. The former was a hugely popular work, translated numerous times.

This work consists out of several parts/books describing important views of nature and art in all parts of the world. This plate is from part E. Artists and Engravers: The publisher of this work is Carl Joseph Meyer (1796-1856). He was a German entrepreneur and publisher. He was very succesful with his publishing firm 'Bibliographisches Institut', which he started in his hometown Gotha in 1826. He published bibles, literature and geographis atlasses.
