Xu Beihong 徐悲鸿(1895-1953) was from Yinxing, Jiangsu Province. At age 17, Xu already taught art in his native place. In 1914, he went to Shanghai to study art and French. Cai also encouraged him to go to Paris (1919), where Xu studied at the Ecole National Supérieure des Beaux Arts, with periods in Berlin (192123) and Singapore (1925).
