Madama Butterfly is an opera in three acts, with music by Giacomo Puccini and libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It is based on the short story "Madame Butterfly" by John Luther Long. The opera tells the story of a young Japanese geisha, Cio-Cio San, who is captivated by a U.S. Navy officer, Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton. Pinkerton arranges to marry her in a Japanese wedding ceremony, but his desire for Butterfly is so strong that he would do anything to have her.
