US highway 49 originally went from Piggott, Arkansas all the way down south to Gulfport, Mississippi, generally running in a south by southeast direction. It is said that famous blues musician Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil at the junction of Mississippi US highway 61 and US highway 49 in Clarksdale, MS.
