Theatrum Europaeum was a journal on the history of the German-speaking lands by Matthaus Merian, published between 1633 and 1738 in 21 quarto volumes. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Caspar Merian' after an anonymous artist. Caspar Merian (1627-1686) was one of the most important German topographical engravers and publishers in the Baroque period. Matthaus Merian the Elder (1593-1650) was born in Basel. He studied drawing and copper engraving from the engraver Friedrich Meyer in Zurich. 1619 he went to Frankfurt where he worked for the publisher Johann Theodor de Bry, whose daughter he married.
