There were various traditions respecting its foundation, all of which point to its high antiquity, but form which we cannot gather any certain information on the subject. It is said to have been afterwards destroyed by the Samnites, and to have been repopulated by a colony of Achaeans, who had been invited for that purpose by the inhabitants of Sybaris.
