The 50mm focal length lends itself to portrait work but the lens also makes a great general purpose lens with the fast F/1.7 aperture enabling the user to use shallow depth of field to isolate subjects, an aspect that this lens excels at due to it's attractive rendering of out of focus parts of the image, known as "bokeh".
