Vincenzo Gemito was born in Naples in 1852 to unknown people who left him at the Pia Casa dell'Annunziata: Giuseppina Baratta made him his mother.At the age of nine, he introduced himself to the sculptor Emmanuele Caggiano who took him to work and live with him.
