In 1954, SP brought engine X-1, a GE 50 ton diesel (GE build number 32226) with a 450 HP Caterpillar diesel engine and “narrow-gauged” standard-gauge trucks, to the desert to replace the three remaining already aged 4-6-0 steam locomotives.
