Lights up and shows time when plugged in. This device uses 30-pin connector so it only compatible with old iPhones like original iPhone, 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S and older iPods unless you buy an adapter. I don’t have an iPhone or iPod that is compatible with this anymore so I have no way to test if the music plays through the speakers. There is a slot on the back to put 4 AA batteries. Inside of the battery compartment is dirty.
