Thyroid nodules are abnormal growths of thyroid tissue. They may be solid or fluid-filled. Roughly half of all people will have thyroid nodules by age 60. Thyroid nodules rarely cause symptoms but, if large enough, can cause discomfort or difficulty in swallowing or breathing.
